{"id":8316,"date":"2016-01-20T00:56:21","date_gmt":"2016-01-20T00:56:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.salushomecare.com\/san-diego\/?p=8316"},"modified":"2025-08-19T07:28:52","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T07:28:52","slug":"negative-feelings-aging-can-afect-hearing-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.salushomecare.com\/san-diego\/blog\/negative-feelings-aging-can-afect-hearing-memory\/","title":{"rendered":"Negative Feelings About Aging Can Afect Hearing &amp; Memory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A groundbreaking study shows that a person\u2019s mental attitude toward aging may play a significant role in how they perform on hearing and memory tests as they get older. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/pubs\/journals\/pag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The study<\/a><\/strong>, conducted by researchers from the University of Toronto, is the first to analyze the relationship between a person\u2019s views on aging, perceptions of their own memory and hearing skills, and actual memory and hearing ability.<\/p>\n<h2>Memory and Hearing Tests<\/h2>\n<p>A group of 301 individuals ranging in age from 56 to 96 was first tested on basic memory and hearing skills. Study participants were asked to view a list of words on a computer screen and listen to other words on headphones. They were then asked to recall and write down as many of the words as possible. Participants were also asked to listen to a short list of words and repeat the words right away. They then had to try to recall the same list of words five minutes later.<\/p>\n<h2>Views on Aging<\/h2>\n<p>To determine views on getting older, researchers provided participants with a series of scenarios and asked them to assign a score indicating any age-related concerns. For example, participants were asked to imagine that they were in a wreck where it was unclear who was at fault. They were asked to indicate if they would worry about being blamed due to their age. Participants also had to rate their concern over common age-related issues such as losing independence, becoming forgetful, and finding contentment in their later years.<\/p>\n<h2>Measuring Self-perception<\/h2>\n<p>To measure participants\u2019 views of their own hearing and memory abilities, researchers asked them if they agreed or disagreed with various questions and statements. For example, participants were asked if they thought they could easily remember names or engage in phone conversations.<\/p>\n<h2>Link Between Negative Views and Self-confidence<\/h2>\n<p>The study showed that participants with negative views about aging and a low perception of their own memory and hearing abilities performed more poorly on the tests than their counterparts. Researchers are quick to point out that not all older adults who performed poorly on the tests had negative views on aging; however, the results indicate a strong correlation between negativity about aging and the individual\u2019s self-confidence in their own ability.
