In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salushomecare.com\/san-diego\/hospice\/\">hospice<\/a> and palliative care, technology helps us to enhance the lives of our patients by relieving pain or discomfort and more holistically meeting emotional or psychological needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One form of technology that\u2019s getting some attention in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salushomecare.com\/san-diego\/blog\/the-benefits-of-entering-hospice-sooner\/\">hospice care<\/a> industry is virtual reality (VR) . Essentially, this involves wearing a headset that beams 3D images right into the retina. Wearing a headset allows a person to see what they\u2019d expect to see if they turned left, right or looked forward. The wearers perceptual vision tricks them into thinking this is in the real world, so they experience the event as if they\u2019re living it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>A Life Without Regrets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For many hospice or palliative care patients, virtual\nreality technology is helping them to let go of regrets about things they haven\u2019t\nhad the chance to do in life. For instance, a patient who always wanted to dive\nwith great white sharks or journey on an African Safari can simply put on a\nheadset and experience the event right from their bedroom. Another patient who\nwants to one last time return to the place where his spouse proposed can enjoy\nthis experience too, right from the comfort of home. While these patients living\nwith life-threatening or life-limiting diseases likely lack the stamina to\nventure away from home and take part in these experiences, but virtual reality\nmakes it possible. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Quality of Life in Hospice or Palliative Care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This kind of technology, the most popular currently being\nthe Google Daydream System, can bring joy to a patient\u2019s life and reduce\nemotional stress, depression or anxiety. As a result, physical discomfort\nincluding back aches, headaches, stomach pain or joint pain are also sometimes\nreduced. While this isn\u2019t the only solution to keeping a patient more\ncomfortable throughout their hospice or palliative care journey, it can\ncompliment medications and other medical interventions and make the plan of\ncare more successful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research suggests that our brains process and accept a virtual\nreality world within seconds. Then, the experience becomes all-absorbing. This\nshort period of time further lends to its emotional and health benefits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>The Beginnings of Virtual Reality in Healthcare<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, where did the idea of bringing virtual reality into the\nhospice and palliative care spectrum begin? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story is quite interesting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flix Films director Leon Ancliffe had a friend living with\nparalysis back in 2016. She had one regret \u2013 that she had never had the\nopportunity to swim with dolphins. &nbsp;Using\nVR technology, Ancliffe helped her reach this personal goal. The impacts of\nplacing the headset on her head were astonishing. She expressed great joy and\nsatisfaction in being able to check off this important bucket list item from\nher personal list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtual reality in hospice care is currently in the pilot\nstage. Primary projects are mostly found in the UK, but stateside trials are in\nthe earliest stages too. As the program expands, it will give more patients the\njoy that Ancliffe\u2019s friend experienced as they are empowered to check items off\ntheir bucket list and release so many feelings of regret. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salushomecare.com\/san-diego\/blog\/is-hospice-the-right-choice\/\">Salus<\/a> continues to watch the advance made as trials continue regarding adding the VR experience to hospice and palliative care plans. \u00a0In the near future, we may see a time when every hospice or palliative care patient is given the chance to benefit from a virtual reality experience, empowering them all to live better lives, every day. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Virtual reality helps hospice and palliative care patients to enjoy a higher quality of life.
