Ambulation limitations, weakness, serious medical conditions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salushomecare.com\/san-diego\/blog\/caregiver-resources-alzheimers-dementia\/\">cognitive decline<\/a> all increase the likelihood that a senior could succumb to the most devastating effects of a fire if they\u2019re not prepared. That\u2019s why advanced planning and support are so important.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before a fire impacts your community, take some time to make a plan, discuss important information and ensure that everyone in your aging loved one\u2019s circle of support knows how to help keep them safe. In many of our communities, that risk is currently wildfires. Stay informed by watching your local news programs, checking the weather in your area, and keeping an eye on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readysandiego.org\/wildfire-hazard-map\/\">the San Diego hazard map<\/a>. Spending just a few minutes a day reviewing information can help to keep your family safe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing A Senior\u2019s Emergency Evacuation Kit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salushomecare.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/09\/disaster-preparedness-kit.jpg\" alt=\"well-stocked-disaster-preparedness-kit\" class=\"wp-image-9804\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.salushomecare.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/09\/disaster-preparedness-kit.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.salushomecare.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/09\/disaster-preparedness-kit-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.salushomecare.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/09\/disaster-preparedness-kit-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If your family needs to evacuate, there are some supplies that are important to have on hand for health and survival. Known as your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/health\/healthy-living\/info-2017\/packing-your-emergency-preparedness-kit-fd.html\">\u201cgo bag\u201d<\/a>, an emergency preparedness kit is best prepared by creating a list of materials to pack and packing them in advance. Have your bag ready to grab at a moment\u2019s notice.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At minimum, the bag needs to contain 3-5 days of essential medications, water, non-perishable foods and seasonally appropriate clothing. Include a flashlight and batteries for navigating dark or smokey areas, copies of important medical and legal documents, recent digital photos of loved ones, phone numbers for family members, your homecare provider and friends,&nbsp; and contact information for the medical professionals who support you. It\u2019s also helpful to have a cellphone charger in the kit and extra batteries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High risk seniors are advised to pack 2-3 masks to use in case you are evacuating to a busy shelter or another populated area. This can help to protect you from COVID-19 if social distancing isn\u2019t possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your loved one has concerns related to bladder or bowel control, sanitary supplies will reduce the risk of embarrassment and discomfort. If they regularly use any medications that are injected, include a few days supply of syringes in the kit. While you might have the opportunity to restock these items at the store or pharmacy, locations across San Diego will likely be closed or difficult to travel to until you\u2019re settled in a safer place.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Aging Loved One\u2019s Evacuation Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Disasters bring stress, uncertainty and confusion, so it\u2019s important to make your plan ahead of the disaster to reduce negative emotions and dangerous mistakes. Each room in your home needs two exits in case one can\u2019t be used because of smoke or fire. No matter how many exits a room has, they\u2019re useless if an elderly loved one isn\u2019t physically or cognitively able to reach and use them and doesn\u2019t have support. If your loved one has physical or cognitive limitations, have a plan for who will support them in getting outside of the home. A family member, a trusted neighbor or your loved one\u2019s professional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salushomecare.com\/san-diego\/blog\/distinguishing-between-in-home-care-and-in-home-health-care\/\">San Diego caregiver<\/a> are all good options.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once everyone is safely outside of the home, it\u2019s important to know where the meeting place is and have developed a plan for where you\u2019ll go to evacuate. Review the plan on a regular basis with your family and any care providers who will support your aging loved one. It\u2019s also a good idea to have a backup option in case someone isn\u2019t available or faces obstacles in reaching your loved one. Additionally,&nbsp; have a plan for who will make contact with other family members once everyone is out of the home and safe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As fires continue to threaten San Diego County, Salus reminds you to plan appropriately. She spent the earliest part of her career assisting clients and supporting family caregivers in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. Later, she served as a social worker and case manager for Services to Maintain Independence at the Department of Social Services for one of the largest counties in North Carolina. In that role, her goal was to assist clients who wished to age in place, providing them with resources, information and support that made it easier to safely remain at home. Today, Christine's role has shifted, and she focuses on providing families and seniors with support through digital media platforms as they navigate information, search for tools to overcome isolation and find ways to stay more connected to society while aging in place. Christine is passionate about helping seniors to maintain independence and providing families with the information they need to overcome challenges associated with dementia, physical health conditions and the aging process.
