In Utah, school nursing services are paid through the individual school districts. Insurance does not cover school nursing, nor does the Medically Complex Children’s Waiver Program. In order to access these services, it is important to work with an agency that is contracted with your school district to provide school nursing. Salus Homecare of Utah contracts with most school districts in the state of Utah. Contact us, and we’ll be happy to assist and help determine if your child is eligible for coverage.
Yes, our nurses are able to provide some schoolwork and homework assistance as long as the work is appropriate for your child’s abilities and this type of support is part of the agreed upon plan of care.
As every child has individual needs, where a nurse might sit can vary depending on an assessment of those needs as well as the setup of the classroom which your child is in. In many cases, the nurse will sit right next to your child in order to offer direct and immediate assistance. However, some children do better with a little space. In these cases, the nurse might sit away from the child but will always maintain visual contact throughout the entirety of the school day.
