San Fernando Valley Home Care Services:

What Is Home Care?

Home care is a service that meets non-medical needs for aging, ill and disabled individuals in the comfort of home. This type of service may be provided short term during a period of recovery or long term to support goals such as aging in place.

Salus Homecare of San Fernando Valley’s professional caregivers provide assistance to many individuals with essential personal care and hygiene needs called activities of daily living.

ADLs include:

  • Showering
  • Getting dressed
  • Brushing / flossing teeth
  • Safe ambulation that reduces the risk of falls
  • Safe transfers standing to sitting or standing to laying down
  • Eating
  • Continence / hygienic incontinence

ADLs support health and hygiene, but they must be supplemented with IADLs. Many individuals lose the ability to complete IADLs effectively first due to the more complex nature of these tasks and the mental aptitude that is necessary in order to manage them.

IADLs include:

  • Dialing / talking on the phone
  • Paying bills / balancing a checkbook
  • Managing general household needs
  • Going shopping for essentials
  • Driving or using public transport
  • Buying, prepping and cooking food
  • House cleaning and laundry

In many cases, aging, disabled and ill individuals turn to family members to assist with ADLs and IADLs. While loving children and spouses are often quite supportive, they benefit from a break or assistance with managing all of the tasks involved in being a family caregiver. Salus Homecare of San Fernando Valley provides support in the form of respite care.

Respite Care:

  • Makes it possible for family caregivers to take a break
  • Provides assistance while family caregivers work outside the home
  • Provides assistance with ADLs and IADLs that are difficult for fragile or aging family caregivers to manage
  • Can assist with household tasks such as laundry, cleaning and meal preparation
  • Complements the care provided by family members in a loving and supportive manner

Who Pays for Home Care

Home care services in San Fernando Valley consist of non-medical tasks, and therefore, they are often not considered to be medically indicated. For this reason, these services are seldom covered by private insurance, Medicare, Medi-Cal or Veteran’s benefits. Salus Homecare of San Fernando Valley has assisted many clients with creating cost effective and beneficial care plans that offer great value for the clients we serve. These families often use the following methods to assist in paying for care.

  • Reverse Mortgages
  • Pooled Funds from several family members
  • Caregiver Stipends offered by some companies
  • Trust Funds
  • Filing for Workers’ Compensation
  • Investing in Long Term Care Insurance
  • Requesting care part time, when family caregivers are not available

  • Does a client ever receive both home care and home health services?

Yes. In some cases it is appropriate for a client to receive multiple types of care. This might be the case when an individual returns home from the hospital and needs assistance managing an IV or caring for a wound but is also unable to grocery shop, cook, bathe or get dressed independently. Your specific situation will be evaluated during the in home assessment process, and we can make service recommendations that will benefit you most.

  • Is respite care necessary if my daughter lives with me and does not have a job outside the home?

Respite care is beneficial for all family caregivers, regardless of their work status. It provides them with time to step away, get to their own medical or personal appointments, spend time with friends or simply relax. If your routine is different than your daughter’s, we can even provide respite care to meet your needs overnight or in the early morning while she sleeps.

  • Is every client assigned one caregiver?

Salus Homecare of San Fernando Valley provides individualized care to each client, but we sometimes assign more than one caregiver to assist them. This might happen because of your scheduling preferences, or a backup caregiver might step in to assist when your primary caregiver is not available.
