December 31, 2017I was introduced to Salus and its team of angels in 2015 when we needed caregiving for my father-in-law who was in declining health while residing at a local assisted living facility. His personality and behavior were a challenge to say the least. Our Salus case manager and her team managed to work with his quirks and provide excellent care for him until his passing in August of 2016. The team communicated with me regularly to keep me up to date on his needs and condition. They were in constant contact with the nursing staff and the hospice team. We truly believe that my father-in-law received the best care while also creating an environment of dignity during his final year of life. In early 2016, I contacted Salus to create an in-home care giving plan for my mother who lived in Los Alamitos. It was clear to everyone that the best and safest solution for her would be assisted living. We decided to move slowly with caregiving twice a week to allow her to make the decision that she needed help. My mother was not kind to the caregivers who were extremely patient with her even though she was verbally abusive to them. Last Summer my mother began throwing out a lot of her personal belongings. Her Salus caregiver at the time was concerned that she was throwing out a valuable coin collection so she retrieved it from the trash. My mother was upset with her, and told her caregiver to keep it for herself. Knowing that she was not allow to accept any gifts from clients, the caregiver reported this to our Salus case manager and the decision was to bring it to the office in Irvine where I would pick it up. As it turned out, the coins had no monetary value but were of sentimental value as my father kept a few coins from each country he visited during his life. These coins are now in a necklace that I had created to remember my father. Although we all believed that the length and quality of my mother's life would have been better if she were in assisted living, she made it clear to everyone that she wanted to live out her days at home where she recently died peacefully. My husband and I believe that we provided the best care for each of our parents and honored their requests. I make it a point to share our positive stories about Salus and especially our case manager. It is comforting to know that in a serious time of need, your organization provides integrity, professionalism and peace of mind to your clients. Thank you for taking such good care of our parents.
