Salus Spiritual Support During Hospice Care

Spirituality is a broad term with different meanings for different people. While many view spirituality as participating in an organized religion, this does not have to be the case. Spirituality can be a connection to self or a reflection on thoughts, values and the meaning of life. After learning of a terminal diagnosis, many individuals start to question their own spirituality. They may spend time thinking about the meaning of life or what comes after death, or they may contemplate how they have lived their life and if they are satisfied with that. Responses often vary. Salus Homecare San Diego is here to honor that. Our hospice spiritual support program provides nurturing, opportunities for conversation and a variety of services to help.

Spiritual Hospice Support Provided:

Spiritual Hospice Support Provided:

  • Non-denominational clergy support
  • Personal and family counseling
  • Literature to help clients understand or cope with spirituality
  • Assistance in accessing community support groups
  • Opportunities to reconnect with a religious congregation if the client chooses

Some clients are not religious. However, even they often find value in nurturing their spiritual side. This can help them to regain a sense of purpose, better cope with what is ahead and even mend relationships with loved ones. Spiritual health is also often connected to physical health. Pain management is sometimes easier when spirituality is nurtured.

Salus Homecare San Diego offers spiritual support that is non-judgmental, non-denominational and sensitive. The client leads the way to spiritual conversations, and our role is to provide support in a way that is comfortable for them. Spiritual support is not a mandatory service, but it is always available should clients wish to take advantage of it at any point during their care.

When we first approached Salus in regard to the care of our parents, both in their late 80’s, we had no idea what challenges lay ahead. Six years later, we can honestly say we have experienced it all, from skin tears and bed sores to digestion issues and catheter problems, and everything in between. After a short period of determining which caregivers were a good match for our parents, we settled on a group of incredibly dedicated and caring individuals from Salus, who were with our parents to the end. They became our eyes and ears for our parents’ well-being and frequently they would text us or send pictures to keep us apprised. We will be forever grateful for their service and for doing their very best to improve the quality of life of our parents. We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to Salus’ case manager and schedulers. They were without exception professional, caring, and competent, which helped to keep as much continuity of caregivers as possible. We highly recommend Salus to anyone requiring homecare or hospice care.

Spiritual Support FAQ's

No, there are no religious requirements for spiritual support. Our hospice chaplain will offer support in a non-denominational and non-judgmental way. Our goal is to help you develop tools that assist with comfort, strength and hope. We recognize that this means different things to different people and respect each person’s views on spirituality.

Yes. Our goal is not to take the place of your spiritual home. Rather, we hope to supplement the support they offer you and make it easier for you to access their services and care. We are happy to work in conjunction with your chaplain and encourage you to find the best path toward spiritual strength and comfort in your own individual way.

Salus Homecare San Diego’s hospice team has many different resources available for our clients. Our hospice chaplain will be happy to discuss them with you and make recommendations for reading materials, videos or other such materials. Some other options for finding inner peace include journaling, working with various art mediums or listening to music. We encourage you to explore any or all of these resources and will be happy to help guide you in any way possible.
